二つの研究会の位置づけ Two Seminars, One Vision
「理論言語学」という広大な学問分野があります。 Theoretical Linguistics is a vast and profound academic field.
「言語学」と聞くと、勘違いされることが多いのですが、これは、語学のエキスパートを要請する学問分野ではありません。もちろん、「英語の勉強が楽しいから」この分野の研究者になったという人も多くいるのですが、いわゆる語学オタクになるためにある学問分野というわけではないんです。 People sometimes come in like, “Oh, this is where you go if you wanna learn to speak a bunch of languages, right?” Not really. That’s kind of a common misconception people have about linguistics. Sure, a lot of people get into it because they enjoy studying languages like English, but it’s not really about becoming a hardcore language nerd.
じゃあ、いったいここは何を研究する場所なのでしょうか。実は、理論言語学とは、ことばを分析しながら、それを操る人間の不思議を研究する科学の一分野です。 So then what do we actually study here? Well, theoretical linguistics is basically a branch of science that tries to understand the human mind by analyzing language and how we use it.
伝統も厚く、色々な学問分野との交流も豊かで、とてもやりがいのある面白い研究分野なんです！だって、みなさん、人間ほど複雑で豊かなコミュニケーション・システムを持つ動物って知らないですよね。人間（ヒト）の言葉っていったいどういう仕組みになっているのでしょうか、そんなこと考え始めたら、とってもワクワクするじゃないですか！ 😆 It’s got a long tradition, it connects with all kinds of other fields, and honestly, it’s a super fun and rewarding area to study. I mean, think about it—there’s no other animal out there with a communication system as complex and rich as humans, right? Once you start wondering how human language actually works, it gets pretty exciting, doesn’t it?
さて、そんな理論言語学という分野で、私（山田彬尭）は研究を進めているのですが、この研究の過程で、しばしば自分の強みとして織り交ぜているのが、言語実験や大規模コーパスの解析などの定量的な視点です。理論言語学で蓄積されてきた定性的な議論をしっかり味わうって、でもそれだけじゃなくて、質的な議論ではなかなか見えてこなかった細やかな特徴を統計モデリングを通して拾い上げる、そういう実践をしています。 That’s the kind of field I work in, and, there is one important practice characterizing my research---a hybird perspective emcompassing not only a qualitative but also a quantitative data analysis, like running language experiments or working with large corpora.
私が開催するこの二つの研究会でも、そういった理論言語学と呼ばれる学問分野に、学際的、分野横断的な視点を取り入れて、発展させていきたいという人たちがメインで集まる場所にしたいなと思っています。 I really value the kind of careful, qualitative insights that theoretical linguistics has built up over time—but I don’t want to stop there. With statistical modeling, you can start to pick up on subtle patterns that are hard to see through qualitative analysis alone.
そこで、私の研究実践を反映して、研究会（ゼミ）も二本立てです。伝統的な言語学を学ぶ「理論言語学実践」と、発展的なデジタルヒューマニティーズ的視点を取り入れた「言語×DH×FW」を用意しています。 So, reflecting how I actually do research, the seminar is split into two tracks. One is “Theoretical Linguistics in Practice,” where we dig into the more traditional side of the field, and the other is “Language × DH × FW,” which brings in a more quantitative, digital humanities–style perspective.

フィールドワークを交えながら量的に分析。
伝統の殻を破る応用を目的とした研究会です。We take a quantitative approach grounded in statistical modeling, combining it with fieldwork to analyze language data.
This seminar is all about pushing beyond the boundaries of tradition.

So, as you can see, the two seminars are closely connected at a high level, but they each have their own flavor.
